Ship Reviews

We just returned from our cruise on the Equinox. Overall the experience was perfect for us. We brought our 15 and 23 year old with us. Our 15 year old connected with a nice (well behaved, seemingly responsible and fun) group of teens she hung out with most of the time. They were in and out of the teen club and she had good things to say about the activities and staff there. We stayed in the Penthouse Suite which, if you can do it, do it! The room was amazing with more than enough space for the four of us. The suite staff (Kenneth was our butler and Tetiana was our statroom attendant) were attentive, amazing and very friendly. The Retreat concierges were also incredibly attentive and made every request a reality. One of the perks was the inclusive dining. We enjoyed Luminea, mostly for breakfast and two dinners. We went to Le Petit Chef but found it a bit gimicky. The food was good but we would probably skip it next time. Murano was incredible! The food, service and presentation were beyond compare. We ended up eating there three times and they were very accommodating of adding reservations for two nights we had not initially reserved. We are Jewish, and I requested Challah's for Shabbat which they brought to our table. The common areas were clean and comfortable. My wife and I spent most of our time at the Retreat sundeck. Our kids stayed by the pool which was more lively. Both areas were great. We really enjoyed the cruise and would not hesitate booking this ship again.

Four middle aged friends had a great time together on an older ship. High points: friends, relaxing, beautiful ports. This is my second Celebrity Cruise - really enjoyed the Edge a year ago. I've been on Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Princess and Disney. The CABIN: The only annoying thing was that there is no outlet near the bed. There is an outlet on the desk. So after reading my kindle book had to get up and go plug in at night. This seems small, and it is. Two women who overpacked found plenty of space for our stuff. We found our room with veranda very comfortable. We liked that our suitcase fit under the bed. We were able to hang all of our clothes and put the rest into the drawers. There were enough places for all our toiletries in the bathroom and the shower pressure was excellent. I liked the way the shower doors worked. Our Steward was very friendly and pleasant. He tidied up and made our beds and replaced towels and everything we needed. We did ask for wine glasses for our wine and he brought just one. That was odd. We just used the water glasses after that. Then one day we took our room glasses into the evening show with us and left them there. Ooops. We are apparently not supposed to do that. He brought us more water glasses though. We did have to keep asking for order forms for breakfast. One of our friends did have some concerns with her room and steward. The bathroom was not at all clean at check in time, but he did fix it. Then she ordered continental breakfast which never arrived. He seemed confused when he came to get the dirty plate and she told him she had never received it. He didn't do anything to make amends. She also mentioned not getting beach towels on shore days. There were not towel animals if that is your kind of thing. That was fine with us. Staff in general were pleasant and helpful. One in our group really missed the excellent customer service of Disney "cast members." I did feel that the constant promotion of the drink packages and specialty restaurants was off putting. The SHIP and Activities We thought the ship was attractive and well maintained. There are lots of places to get drinks, listen to music and have conversation. I like to find a lounge chair, ocean view, and read a book, but there were all the usual activities. We played some trivia and learned about how glasses impact the taste of wine. I noticed folks playing cards and doing puzzles in little game areas. There were no slides and skating rinks or malls on this older ship, which was fine with us. We did most of the evening shows which were fine, nothing spectacular. Highlights were a high energy Elton John show and incredibly talented female singer who featured female rock and roll songs. I believe she performed on Broadway. The pools were nice and never seemed too crowded. The chairs by the pool were packed in and hard to come by. FOOD The main negative, for me, was that the food was lackluster. I will qualify this by saying that I am a foodie who dines out often in a major city. My companions enjoyed their meals more than I did. Some high points: the French Onion soup with flavorful broth and melty, stretchy cheese decadence. The wedge salad was good. The prime rib was tender. But nothing was exceptional. For example, salmon tartar was advertised as being topped with roe. The bite with the three tiny eggs was tasty as it needed some salt or flavor, but the rest was bland. A lamb t-bone would have been okay if someone had cut the tough part off. The ratatouille that came with it was delicious though. Trout, which I love, was fine, but was a small portion and a touch salty. It sat on some soggy spinach. Often the meals are presented with fancy smears or garnishes, as if creatively prepared, but the flavors do not back this up. For example a caesar salad is served without option of anchovies and Tiramisue presented without lady fingers- it was all whipped cheese with a hint of coffee flavor and some bits of a cookie? Crumbled into it. It was not terrible, but it wasn’t Tiramisue. The ice cream was icy instead of creamy, obviously melted and refrozen. We were twice told they didn’t have things, blue cheese dressing and coffee ice cream, that later arrived. The dressing came with the salad, luckily, but the coffee ice cream came after the substitute had been eaten. The waiter seemed to have gone the extra mile, and seemed to want praise, but why not bring it in the first place? Also, I wish the elevated menu options that they offered on the formerly-known-as-formal night (now it's evening chic) were offered through out the week. Some nights the choices were lack luster. Even on the fancy night staff were hard selling the specialty restaurants -"in the main dining room you get a tiny lobster tail" they told everyone but in the up-charge restaurants we would get a big one or whole lobster. But my meals are supposed to be included...I already paid for them! The difference between the specialty restaurants and main restaurant irritated me. On Disney, for example, the extra $$ options do offer more upscale options, but the quality in main dining is still excellent. For example, in Tucson restaurant on Equinox (specialty $$ Italian) I ordered Tiramisu also - this one was completely different (and yes it had lady fingers.) Yet even in Tuscan I was a bit disappointed. The apps were very good (pork belly was fantastic) and the filet was delicious. However the pasta course, which the waiters insisted we get because it was their specialty with homemade pasta, was awful. I had lobster sauce on rigatoni, but mostly ate the sauce with the bits of lobster because the rigatoni was thick and tough. My friend had the chicken parmesan over spaghetti and said her chicken was dry and pasta hard as if undercooked. Surprisingly our best meal was in Le Petit Chef, which I didn't want to pay for since I've been to it on another ship and felt the graphic entertainment was a bit juvenile. However the four course meal there, and the service, was the best we had anywhere on ship. Again it irritated me that the Boeuf en Croute that we had in LPC was fantastic while the exact same entree we'd had the prior night n main dining room was a pale and bland imitation. Still, I resent having to pay twice for meals just to get a good meal. I want the option of specialty restaurant to be a choice, not a requirement to enjoy my cruise. The buffet was fine for lunch, we used it on the sea days. I There is plenty of assortment, but nothing stood out. I always find the desserts looked better than they taste! A hotdog at the Mast Grill was my best lunch! We enjoyed having coffee, fruit and croissants delivered to our room. Most days I think they heated up the croissants, which then cooled and became very brittle (and messy) one day it seemed they did not do this and the croissant was much softer and better. The PORTs: Puerto Plata in DR was a new one to us and we enjoyed a culture/beach tour. Next time I'd focus on beach or sailing. Old San Juan is a beautiful town to walk. We ran out of time for beach. We ate at Raices, an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant which was tasty but there was a wait and service was slow. St. Martin - We love this port. We had a taxi driver for 6+ hours and she took us to Orient Beach (so beautiful), Maho Beach. for the planes, Marigot for shopping (not very special) and for various photo opportunities. We ate at the Lolo's - for grilled meats and seafood. We loved our port days. Summary: All in all it was a great cruise. I chose the ship because it was reasonably priced and I enjoy the smaller older ships where you can feel the movement of the ocean. My only caveat was the underwhelming food.

Our first celebrity cruise did not disappoint. This was my wife’s 4th and my 8th cruise overall and we were very pleased with our overall experience. We travel with our friends, so in total there were 4 kids and 4 adults. We were traveling during spring break and the ship had a good amount of kids, nothing overwhelming (212 total this week). Pre cruise I couldn’t count the amount of comments that I read that celebrity was not a cruise for kids and to stick to RCL. This was primary due to this ship having an older crowd, no water slides, lack of a kids program and they would be bored. I cruised as a kid with no water slides and minimal kids program had had the time of my life. As did our kids. Having a pool with Buffett for breakfast and lunch in a warm climate was all that is needed. Embarkation was a breeze at port Canaveral. Quickest we have ever gotten on a ship. Service was fantastic, especially in dining room. The friendliness of the staff as well as fell cruise passengers surprised us. With it being an older crowd the conversations in the elevators started by other guests to our children were great to see. The ship overall was in good condition. I believe it went to a dry dock within the last year or so. We got the update drink package and not having to sign each time we ordered a drink was a game changer. Waits for a drink at bars were usually never more than a minute or two. Other than the pool during sea days and one day at the buffet for lunch we never felt the ship was crowded. Food overall we thought was good. Variety at the Buffett and the ability to order multiple appetizers or main dishes pleased everyone. Entertainment was fine. Kids loved the shows and again the interaction between the performers and the kids delighted us. We have been told for years to try celebrity and we are disappointed that we waited so long. They will be our go to / preferred cruise line weather traveling with kids or without kids.
